The opening ceremony began with a symbolic ribbon cutting, followed by a lit LED strip. Dressed as Ilmarinen forging the famous mill of Sampo, Artem Tchernetsov, a student of forest, engineering and building sciences, addressed the students and guests with a welcoming word.

At "Ilmarinen", schoolchildren and students, supervised by instructors, will learn how to search for information, work on project in a team and obtain research skills.

The project, which received publicity from the Ministry of Education and Science, was actively supported by companies interested in improving the quality of engineering education in Russia: EMC, Intel, LEGO Education and Polymedia. They provided the experience, expertise, training courses and materials and helped to equip the laboratory with the necessary equipment.
