PetrSU Closed the International Summer School “Perceptions of the Arctic and the Barents Sea Area”

Petrozavodsk State University hosted the International Summer School “Perceptions of the Arctic and the Barents Sea Area” that gathered the students and teachers of PetrSU, the Universities of Helsinki and Lapland (Finland).

Petrozavodsk State University hosted the International Summer School “Perceptions of the Arctic and the Barents Sea Area” that gathered the students and teachers of PetrSU, the Universities of Helsinki and Lapland (Finland).

At the School 30 participants discussed the pressing issues of the development of the Arctic and the Barents Sea Area, history and international relations in this region, perception of the problems of the High North from the viewpoints of different actors: states, regional authorities, indigenous peoples, various non-governmental organizations and business entities.

The program included lectures, discussions at seminars, as well as practicing applying for a project on the development of the Euro-Arctic region. All the events were conducted in the English language.

This year the lectures were delivered by the Professor of the Arctic Policy of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Lapland Lassi Heininen, the head of the educational program of the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki Tapani Kaakkuriniemi, PhD candidates of the University of Helsinki Hilma Salonen and Jussi Huotari, the Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Industry of the Republic of Karelia Dmitry Kislov, the employees of the Department of World History, Political Studies and International Relations Iliya Solomeshch and Anton Lapshin, research fellow of Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ekaterina Shlapeko. In the framework of the School the students took part in a practical class on applying for project held by Igor Shevchuk at the premises of  Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

All the participants of the School received comprehensive knowledge of the development of the Euro-Arctic region. Feedback provided by the students of the International School showed that the participants commended the content of the lectures, efficiency of working in groups, organization and the friendly atmosphere of the classes.

The International School in Karelia is held at PetrSU annually since 2004. This year the School was held with the support of the Program for Development of Student Organizations of PetrSU.
