Petrozavodsk University Has Launched the International Research on Migration Flows in the Arctic Region

The University will provide an overview of four types of migration in five countries.

The PetrSU project Arctic Demography Index received a status of a project in the Arctic Council, where Russia will take over the chair in 2021. In cooperation with the universities of Norway and Canada, the Russian university will provide the overview of four types of migration in nineteen Arctic territories in five countries, members of the international organisation.

The three-year project on the characteristics of migration in the Arctic region received the support of the Council alongside with two other Russian projects, one from Yakutia and a joint project of Yamal and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Experts from PetrSU jointly with colleagues from Norwegian Nord University (Bodø) and Canadian University of Laval (Québec) study four types of migration flows: labour, education, vacation and retiree. The experts identify the main sources of the labour force coming from abroad, the reasons of the young people outflow and, vice-versa, reasons of return for jobs and higher salaries. The project will cover the issues of vacation: where and how Arctic residents spend their long-lasting northern vacations as well as the characteristics of migration from the north after the retirement.

The project will result in creation of a website providing an opportunity to get acquainted with the entire Arctic Demography Index data including demographic indicators, which are poorly represented in the national statistics.
